omg, I can't believe what I learnt in information system actually has some use...

1) from various post i have seen so far, GW probably uses remote info presentation, ie server handles all the data storage and logic, whilst sending processed info back to clients... for security purposes of course...

2) as mentioned, farming bots are not hacks, they are simply programs which does repetitive things for humanm, a sort of AI, intelligient agent iirc

3) the supposed "hacker" didn't talk in green... when u pm some one, your text appears in green...

Hacking GW isn't impossbile however you'd have to hack the server and then Anet probably would shut down the servers, deal with changes, add anti-hack software and then re-open the servers.

So basically all you could do is trade a lot of your time + a lot of other people's time + you getting sued if they trace your I.P (for a lot) = 2 seconds of a little hax of you going faster.

All in all GW almost unhackable

Just because it's all on the servers doesn't mean it isn't hackable. The servers are still run by incredibly complex bits of code, containing a number of bugs that exponentially increases with the size and complexity of the code base. Toss in the chaos of maintaining thousands of simultaneous connections and internet latency, and you'd be naive to think that unintended modifications on the servers are impossible.

That said, while the codebase of the game itself (through the glimpses we've seen of it) seems to be of a quality that gets people fired from enterprise software companies, arena.net's netcode is the best around. They give the client just enough to function, and it simply isn't an open enough system to make it ripe for abuse (unlike, say, World of Warcraft). Whoever wrote it is one of the best in the business - and the lack of any consistent hack in over a year of retail is a testament to the security of their system.

It's quite possible that Guild Wars is hackable to some extent. But if you're looking for a game to hack you really couldn't have picked a worse one.

Peace,
-CxE

Guild wars is a program in which the information is stored mostly on their servers. This is called a server to client service, and cannot be hacked unless you have access to arenanet's servers. The worst you can do to "hack" guild wars is to make a bot program.

QFT. I'm a major fan of the programming team at ArenaNet. I don't always understand what they do, but dear lord, they do it well.

All you really need to understand is that many of these guys worked with BattleNet for Diablo 2, which is probably the most botted/hacked/ruined game in the history of computers (well, one of them at least). A few years trying to combat the best the botters/hackers have to offer (d2.jsp anyone?) surely taught them a few things about how to write hard-to-exploit code. Not only that, but they seem to have figured out a few things about how to make online gaming more streamlined (streamed updates while you play, hosting everything on one "server", using districts in towns, etc.), and frankly that is a large part of what makes the game so good.

The GW community gives anet/NCSoft a lot of stick for this game sometimes but the communty rarely praise them for the security and reliability of the gaming servers. My point being, I'm highly satisfied with the servers and the service provided. Over a year and no hacks and only a few small hours of downtime for maintenance and that rollback. From what I hear from a friend that plays WoW, us Guild Wars folk are pretty lucky.

^_^ im happy with GW security, theres no duped items or anything.

The only way you can lose out is if you are scammed, which is all player based, not server based.

I once told a guy asking where to buyDolyak Signet that I'd sell it to him in all chat. This one other guy then tells me I'm a scammer cause I can't sell skills, but I managed to convince him that I sell it all the time. He then proceeds to ask me how to do it...... cause he just wants to know.... not that he'll actually do it cause it would be considered scamming and bannable.. but it would be good to know just incase he wanted to get rich.. Needless to say, this convo went on for about 10 mins w/ him asking me how to sell skills and me sounding like an established businessman of skills selling.

Moral of the story is that Don't believe all the BS you hear; the above post is a true story, no nubs were harmed in the making of this post.

Do any of you guys remember the "speed hack" rumour of a year ago? Sure, the player looked like he was speeding like all get out, to himself and, short term I think he may have even appeared to be faster to those observing. But the server knew where he was at all times, and he wasn't going any faster than before the use of the alleged "hack." He snapped back to reality sharply, with no change in outcome from the attempt.
Even if the item is not REALLY hacked, they'll still get banned for attempting to scam people right?

Hacks are ment to cause dmg or abuse an exploit. What I ment by cannot be hacked is that you will be found too quickly for it to do much dmg. Since the game is server side they can simply do a roll back to undo all the dmg. Unlike other games where they have to alter the files on your computer to make the rollback happen Anet doesn't have to. Only took them a few hours to roll back all the accounts in GW last time.

Yes you can hack them. In the end will it do any dmg? I dought it. Most hackers are not going to attempt to even try if they know their dmg will be undone in a short time. Besides this is a business for some people. Lets not crash the money train. Most hackers are out to cause finacial harm to companies. Crashing GW wouldn't benifit anyone.

We know that alterations won't work. Dupes are the only thing that's a real threat but its on the server side. In a sense you would have to hack the server to create a dupe. Can anyone say red flag? Item with same stats and skin just got created while no monster was killed. I don't think that would be hard to find. Even if its unided the stats are still known. When you enter an instanced world all the drops from monsters are created. Its predetermined what you are going to get. Its not random on drop. Your inventories are taken into account as well. So all the items in that area are already known before you even enter. I'd say dupes would be a long shot if it ever did happen.

Anet has done an excellent job on the servers. We have only been down 2 days in over a year. 1 of those days was to implement the next chapter.

It'll only show up like that on his computer or any that he hacked the program on.
